Overview
PECB offers certification exams online and on paper.
You can take the online test from home with the PECB Exams app which uses live remote proctoring. The PECB Exams app locks other applications during the session so you stay inside the exam. You schedule online through your MyPECB dashboard or you book through a partner if you are taking a paper exam.
You can also test at paper sessions run by partners.
Open book reference materials
PECB exams are either multiple choice closed/open book and essay open book. Many programs are moving from essay to multiple choice open book.
For open book PECB exams, you may use the following:
- A hard copy of the main standard (ie ISO/IEC 27001:2022)
- Training course materials (through MyPECB and/or printed)
- Any personal notes taken during the training course (through MyPECB and/or printed)
- A hard copy dictionary

Find your exam details
Before you book, open the List of PECB Exams page and find your exam. Each listing shows the duration, the number of questions, the language options, the format, and whether it is available online or on paper.
For example, the exam for ISO 27001 Lead Implementer is three hours with eighty questions and is multiple choice open book.
Scheduling and exam changes
You schedule online exams in MyPECB under Exam Events. If you are taking a paper exam, you schedule with the PECB partner that hosts the session. Reference PECB’s Online Exam Manual for more information.
Use a personal computer when possible. Work devices and networks can block proctoring tools.
Exam day, results, and retakes
Plan to be ready thirty minutes early. Bring a government ID such as a passport, driver’s license, or national ID. Phones and second screens are not allowed. A remote proctor monitors your webcam, microphone, and screen during the online exam.
Multiple choice exam results are shown right after you complete the exam. Essay exam results are communicated through email within three to eight weeks.
You can retake the exam if you do not pass. After your first failed attempt, you must wait fifteen days before the next attempt. If you purchased PECB training from TEKFused or another authorized PECB partner, you can retake the exam for free. Otherwise, retake fees apply.
